Take responsibility
Far too often I hear people complain about the things they have to do: they have to go to work, they have to do the laundry, they have to go to an annoying family event, and the list goes on and on.
Little do they realise that by using this language and phrasing these as have tos, they are removing their responsibility in choosing to do these things. I believe this subconsciously drives people to live life on the passenger seat, in a more reactive manner.
But the truth is that nobody (in most cases) will hold a gun to our heads and force us to go to work. Going to work is a choice that we make every morning. We could wake up tomorrow and choose not to go, but then we'd deal with the consequences of making that choice.
Understanding that everything we do, ultimately, is our choice is empowering and liberating as it has the potential to help us make better choices and lead a more meaningful life. We choose what we want to do, and then deal with the consequences of our actions.
